Charles F. Poehlman, 92, of Syracuse passed away peacefully on Wednesday with his wife Beatrice by his side. He was a native and life resident of Syracuse. Charles served his country in military services for over 28 years. During World War II he served in the Army Air Corps and then enlisted in the Air Force and later was part of the establishment of the 174th Fighter Wing - Air National Guard, where he was called up to active duty at Phalsbourg Air Force Base in France during the Berlin Crisis of 1961 and again in 1968 to Cannon Air Force Base, Clovis, New Mexico. Charles later continued his career of service as the Fire Chief of the 174th Fighter Wing, where he earned the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. Upon his retirement from the military in 1968 he was appointed Chief of the newly created Syracuse Hancock International Airport − Crash Fire Rescue Department, until his retirement in 1985. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Beatrice, who was the love of his life; his daughter, Patricia (James) Matthews; his son, John (Brenda) Poehlman; grandchildren, Sam Rotondo, Erin Horton, Jacqueline Morey, Adam Matthews, Adriane and Katherine Poehlman; seven great-grandchildren and his brother-in-law, Jim (Kay) Miller. Calling hours will be Monday, Oct. 9th, from 5 to 7 pm at Carter Funeral Home, 1604 Grant Blvd., Syracuse. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10:00 am at St. John the Baptist / Holy Trinity Church. Burial, with Military Honors, will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.
